Ski Poles

Ski poles are made of three basic parts: a shaft, a handle, and a basket. The shaft is typically made of a light metal, however, composite materials create a lighter and presently hip alternative. There are two types of handles. Almost all rental handles are the strap type which have webbing to attach the pole to your wrist. The second type of handle, the sword-grip, is much more of an inconvenience to skiers as they have to trudge back up the hill to retrieve their poles after almost every fall. Finally, the size of the basket depends on the type of skiing. For those who ski in powder, a larger basket is preferred as it prevents the pole from sinking into the snow. For those skiing on piste, the size of the basket typically does not matter and thus many skiers favor small baskets.

The type of pole you purchase depends on your needs. If you want to stay within budget, straight poles are both affordable and adequate for most skiers. If you want help in planting your pole correctly, corrective angles may do the job; but when all is said and done, they typically make little difference. Aerodynamic poles are a necessity for speed skiers and downhill races. The most important thing to keep in mind when purchasing a pole is length. When you stand with your knees bent slightly, your forearms should be horizontal.
