If you are willing to travel a little extra, you can avoid some of the crowds, save some money, and still have a great skiing experience. These resorts are not necessarily in the middle of nowhere (though some are); they are simply secluded from other resorts. They also often offer smaller (though probably still adequate) levels of lodging and dining.

Steamboat Springs (or simply, Steamboat) has a great town and great skiing in a pastoral location in a National Forest. A peak day lift ticket is $74, but you can get good deals that include lodging. Telluride (which gained notoriety on Visa commercials during the 1990s) is absolutely beautiful while Crested Butte offers great skiing for all skill levels.

If you’re in southern Colorado, check out Purgatory resort at Durango. Its peak day tickets are only $56, and though it’s a smaller resort, it still offers plenty of skiing of all levels to keep you busy for a few days. Monarch resort, Powderhorn resort, and Wolf Creek are also less crowded than the big name resorts and offer great skiing. Silverton is a great resort for the experts, and Ski Cooper near Leadville has lift tickets for just $36.

These resorts usually don’t have quite the size, accessibility, lodging, or one-size-fits-all quality of the big-name resorts, but they offer great skiing with smaller crowds and for a little less money. If you’re willing to do a little extra preparation for your trip, however, one of these resorts could be the one for you.
