• Always become certified by a qualified diving association before diving.
• Be sure you are in adequate physical condition before diving. You should also know some basic swimming skills.
• Only dive in areas where you are qualified. Do not dive above your certification level.
• Always dive with a buddy.
• Follow all the instructions and rules laid out by the divemaster.
• Make sure your equipment is functioning properly before setting out on a dive, especially is you are diving with rented equipment.
• Check the weather before you dive.
• Wear sunscreen that contains an SPF of at least 15.
• Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
• If you are diving in hot weather, take care to avoid heat exhaustion. Know how to treat it.
• If you are diving in cold weather, take care to prevent hypothermia. Know how to treat it.
• Wear sunglasses that absorb at least 90 percent of UV rays.
• Wear clothing that protects against heat and cold, dangerous ocean life, cuts and scratches, and chemical pollutants.
• Always schedule your dives to remain within the O2 limits and to avoid excessive decompression obligations.
• Be sure you are aware of your maximum bottom time and of the proper amount of safety stops required to surface.
• Have a thorough knowledge of all equipment before beginning a dive.
• Be sure you are prepared to meet any diving emergency that may arise.
• Oxygen should be available on the dive boat as well as a properly stocked fist aid kit. You should be aware of the correct numbers to contact emergency personnel should a medical emergency arise.
• Someone on every boat should be certified in first aid and CPR.
