The desire to discover all that lies beneath the surface of water has probably always existed. Through several sessions of trial and error, a way to breathe underwater at great depths for long periods of time was finally discovered, and thus Scuba diving was born. Scuba stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, which is essentially the method of breathing deep underwater while connected to a tank of air.

Scuba diving was limited to the most adventurous and skilled divers until the 1950’s. It was around that time that the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) was formed that gave instruction to all willing participants. Now, it is estimated that there are over 6 million certified divers around the world, and diving (if performed according to instruction) has been touted to be as safe as swimming.
