Owning an RV is likely a lifelong dream come true for you. It’s a freedom to explore the beauty of America while departing from the daily grind. But with your new freedom comes a responsibility to protect your investment. Whether you’re a retired couple traveling America’s roadways or a vacationing family visiting a national park, you will need RV insurance to protect your motor home with the specialized RV coverage needed by RV owners.

A nice convenience of RV travel is taking along the comforts of home. While camping or just RVing, having the comfortable luxuries of furniture, cookware, TV, and even a cell phone and computer access right at your side makes for a nice vacation. Unfortunately though, many RVers don’t take the time to adequately insure all of those comforts.

A common practice for RV owners is to insure their RV under their current auto policy. But too often the owner does not take the time to read what and how much is covered under their auto policy. In many instances, RV’s covered under auto policies are not adequately covered.

One misconception RV owners have is that the personal property in their RV will be covered under their homeowners policy. This is true, but again, coverage on personal property is limited when the property is kept somewhere other than the “residence premises.” Often the limit in a standard policy is very low and the usual policy deduction would apply.

To insure proper and adequate coverage, a RV owner should add a separate RV coverage to their current auto policy.

If the RV owner’s insurance carrier does not have this type of coverage available, there are insurance companies that specialize in RV coverage. Usually the cost is minimal, especially compared to the alternative of finding out the RV and its possessions are not covered after a disaster happens.
Your RV is more than a car, and your RV insurance should cover more than what car insurance covers. Rather than add your RV to your auto policy, consider insuring your RV on its own policy. Keep the following in mind:

• You have many things in your RV that you would never keep in your car, such as clothing, jewelry, binoculars, VCRs, laptops, camcorders or outdoor gear.
• When you park your RV at a campsite, you may be liable for the area around it. If someone is injured, you may be responsible.
• If your RV is damaged while you're traveling, you'll need a place to stay and a way to get there.
If you insure your RV through a standard auto policy, none of the scenarios above is covered in the event of a loss, which could cost you thousands if you need to make a claim.
When you insure your RV on its own policy, you'll know you have a wide range of coverage for a wide range of incidents that could happen.
