Spend the day in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. Start with the Rhode Island School of Design’s museum located in East Providence. Voted as Fodor’s Choice as the number one thing to see in Providence, this museum traces the history of art through more than 85,000 works of art from all of over the world including Greek statues, Chinese terra cotta, and French Impressionist paintings. Admission is $6.00 for adults.
In the afternoon, head to South Providence to visit the Roger Williams Park and Zoo located on Elmwood Avenue. You can picnic at this 430 acre Victorian park, rent a paddleboat or miniature speedboat, ride a vintage carousel, visit the Planetarium, or the Museum of Natural History. There are more than 900 animals to visit at the zoo. Admission is $6.00 for the museum and the hours are 10 to 5 daily. The zoo is open 9 to 5 daily and admission is $10.00.
If time allows, you will want to see the Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, located in downtown Providence, which encircles a tidal basin and borders the Woonasquatucket River. This is a four acre park that has an amphitheater, boat landings, a spouting fountain in the middle of a pond, and waterfire events which are the lighting of 97 bonfires along the river held on New Year’s Eve and 20 other times during July through October.
