Located on I-95 north in Richmond, just north of the Rhode Island/Connecticut state line is the Welcome Center. Open seven days a week year-round, the center is operated by the Rhode Island Tourism Division staff and is a great place to get literature and advice on activities to do and see in the great state of Rhode Island.
Rhode Island offers a variety of activity options sure to please any age group from world-class theater to visiting quaint seaside villages, sailing, surfing, fishing, kayaking, seal watching, and frolicking on the beach. Scheduled departures leave daily throughout Rhode Island on a variety of sightseeing excursions from schooner cruises to catamaran voyages, and narrated boat tours.
In the springtime, Rhode Island becomes alive with music festivals, art festivals, parades, and activities for everyone.
The golden age of Newport ran from the 1720s to the 1770s. In the 19th century, Newport became the summertime place of choice for the wealthy. Their summer cottages and mansions left a legacy of remarkable homes along Bellevue Avenue which are now open to the public for touring.
Banister’s Wharf is the hub of harbor side shopping and dining. Take time to stroll along the wharf and visit the eclectic boutiques, jewelers, galleries, and restaurants.
The Cliff Walk is a three mile coastal path at the southern corner of Newport where you can view the coast as well as many of the mansions. Along the southern coast is Ocean Drive which is a ten mile view of Newport that you’ll want to take in the evening.
Nearby Bristol is home of the Herreshoff Marine and America’s Cup Museum where you can view displays of sixty historic yachts, steam engines, photographs, and memorabilia of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.
Bristol is also home to the Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum where you can wander around the over 50,000 naturalized daffodils, exotic plants, water garden, and hundreds of spring flowers along the thirty-three acre estate. It includes a 45 room mansion with a beautiful view of the Narragansett Bay. Admission is $5.00 to view the gardens only and $10.00 to see both the gardens and the mansion.
In August of each year, Block Island hosts an art festival that features the works of many of the best regional artists. Admission is free to the Block Island Art Festival.
In Providence you won’t want to miss Federal Hill. The neighborhood holds an event called the Federal Hill Stroll, usually in June, where you can enjoy music and sample cuisine at 20 eateries. This neighborhood represents the Italian culture.
There are many fine museums in Providence including the Museum of Work and Culture, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Museum of Rhode Island History at Aldrich House.
The city of Cranston hosts the annual May Breakfast which has been a tradition since 1867. Breakfast consisting of fried or scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, baked beans, muffins, and johnnycakes is served by Quaker dressed hostesses
