The potential benefits of ISO certification are numerous and varied, but the process of obtaining ISO certification is relatively expensive. You may, as a result, want to carefully weigh the benefits of ISO certification against the specific costs for your business. Those costs differ from business to business depending upon the size and particular nature of your goods or service sector, but there are several costs all companies should consider:

  • Raw Expense: If you choose to pursue ISO certification you’ll face a number of expenses during the process. You’ll spend money to gather your current documentation, compare it to the ISO requirements, and implement the necessary changes. Even if you choose not to retain an independent consultant, it’s likely that you’ll spend several thousand dollars as a small company and tens of thousands as a large company.
  • Resource Outlay: In addition to the standard monetary expense, you should also consider the ways in which the pursuit of ISO certification will impact the allocation of other company resources – especially your human resources. ISO certification requires not only extensive documentation of procedures, but also the extensive training of employees in order to carry out processes that meet ISO standards. ISO certification may take a year or more, so during that time many of your employees may be engaged in training, rather than focusing on the growth of your company.
  • Maintenance: The very maintenance requirements that increase the dynamism of your company also require that you continue to spend money and allocate resources toward continued adherence to ISO standards. Although you won’t necessarily face the same costs as those associated with initial ISO certification, you should debate the worth of the continued expenses and frequent training required in order to retain your ISO certification.
