Despite it being a major part of Spain’s historical and economical factors Portugal during its early days had a strong roman influence and Portugal’s name is derived from the roman name Portus Cale. Cale was the name of the first settlement that was located along the Douro River mouth.
The name was to see several changes before settling on the final name Portugal. Going from Portus Cale, in then changed to Portucale and finally Portugale. Several historians throughout the ages strongly believed that Cale refered to the Greek term Kalles (Beautiful)
