Once the old faucet has been removed, it is time to replace it with a new one. The following is a step by step guide on how to install both a top and bottom-mounted faucet:
If you are installing a top-mounted faucet, first apply a bead of plumber’s putty or silicon caulk around the base of the faucet. You can skip this step, however, if your faucet has a rubber or plastic gasket for a base.
Next, ease the faucet into place and press against the putty to insure a good seal. Then go under the sink to install the washers and mounting nuts onto the tailpieces. You will need to tighten the nuts by hand.
Now you are ready to align the faucet with the back of the sink and tighten the mounting nuts. You can tighten these by using waterpump pliers, an adjustable wrench, or a basin wrench. Once that is complete, wipe away any excess putty or caulk from around the base and the job is finished.
If you are dealing with a bottom-mounted faucet, you will have to start under the sink. From below, hold the faucet in place while you install the washers and mounting nuts. You will need to tighten the nuts by hand. Then, align the faucet with the back of the sink and tighten the mounting nuts with pliers or a wrench.
Once you have tightened the nuts, run a bead of plumber’s putty along the base of the escutcheons and screw them in place. Now you are ready to install the faucet handles. Be sure and look at the handles to see which one is marked hot and which one is marked cold. The one marked with “hot” should always go on the left. Once in place, wipe away any excess putty from around the base of the escutcheons.
