Self pet feeders are also called "gravity-type" and can be termed "automatic." One can have a removable door that is a flap; some have a removable door but a lid that snap-latches to secure it. Some have magnetic doors so your pet can eat but not other critters, keeping pests from the food.

Some self pet feeders have a shut-off valve to stop releasing food after your pet eats a preselected amount. A few have a device you turn to dispense X cups of food; for example, a quarter turn on one device may dispense one cup of food. Note that this requires your presence at mealtimes.

Pets usually adjust to the "on-demand" feeding, so they do not overeat continuously, but not all pets make that transition, so use with care.

Variously sized pet feeders exist, to account for the size difference between, for example, a kitten and a Great Dane.

These feeders can be made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, plastic, or a combination of these options. The galvanized steel version was designed for heavy outdoor use and is the most sturdy option. Stainless steel is still sturdy, and it is easy to clean; they can be used indoors or outdoors. Other options should probably only be used inside.
