How do I incorporate crate training with housebreaking?

Using your dog’s crate makes the housebreaking process a lot more effective. You should have a small, confined crate that will serve as your dog’s den. There should just be enough room in this crate for the puppy to turn around and lie down. If it’s too big, the puppy will divide it into separate rooms, including a bathroom.

It’s best to get a crate with a movable divider so you can adjust the size of the crate as the puppy grows.

Dogs instinctively keep their sleeping areas clean. While you are housebreaking your dog, do not put a towel or pillow in for him to sleep on. Otherwise he will do his business on it and kick it into a corner. If you've allowed him to go to the bathroom when he needs to, he won't dirty his crate if he can help it.
