Scratching Post

Scratching is an internal instinct a cat possesses that cannot be ignored or deterred. Scratching is part of a territorial instinct that drives them to leave their mark and establish their territory. Their paws contain scent glands that emit a distinctive scent every time they scratch. Even if you don’t have other cats that may intrude on their territory, your cat is probably going to take precautionary measures! Besides that, it feels good to your cat to scratch, stretch his muscles and get some great exercise. So…if you can’t beat ‘em – join ‘em! Purchasing a scratching post is the best thing you can do to encourage your cat to remove his claws from the furniture and to keep your sanity.

Purchasing a scratching post is an easy solution to a costly problem. A scratching post should be tall enough for your cat to be able to stretch out full length (about 28 inches high), and sturdy enough for your cat to jump up against without knocking over. If it does topple over on your cat, he probably won’t return! The scratching post should be made of a durable material such as sisal that can satisfy their need to shred without tearing up or wearing down.

Don’t give up if your cat does not go directly to the scratching post when you bring it home. Instead, each time you find him sharpening his claws in his usual place, show him how to use the new scratching post instead. With a little encouragement, your cat should be pleased to have his own piece of furniture.
