Sometimes the unsung victims of domestic violence aren't just those abused:
Pets that are left in an abuser's home often become a target, especially when a family has left to seek shelter. Volunteers are needed who can offer a foster home for pets. A healing process can begin when a victimized family or individual is reunited with their pet once they transition to a safe permanent home, so volunteer efforts are greatly appreciated.
The Against Abuse, Inc. system provides a program called Animal Safe Home Network (ASHN) that was established to aid victims of domestic violence by providing a temporary safe home for family pets. Against Abuse, Inc. is an agency dedicated to providing services, support and education to all who experience the effects of family dysfunction and/or violence, past and present.
It's interesting to see how animals come into play in a situation like that, either as targets of the abuser or reasons the abusee doesn't pack up and leave.
