Hospital's rule on pets fulfills a dying wish

Twang twang go the heartstrings.

Every once in awhile, a business or bureaucracy does something so courageous that you just have to shout it from the rooftops, or at the very least from a front page.

Case in point: Salem Hospital.

A month ago, the hospital showed its generous side when it granted a dying woman's wish to visit with pets she had cared for during her 56-year life.

Now these weren't officially trained and decreed therapy pets, approved by hospital administrators.

These were ordinary dogs, such as Prince, who Julie Shinn adored.

Prince belongs to Lucy and Allan Bellinger of South Salem. When the Bellingers adopted him from the Willamette Humane Society, their friend Julie threw them a pet shower.
