Feline Flu?

Scientists are still uncertain whether the dreaded Bird Flu could be transmitted by cats and other pets to their owners, according to the senior United Nations coordinator for the avian influenza.

Dr. David Nabarro reports that their is insufficient research at this point to establish how large the risk was of people contracting the disease from pets, even under the assumption of small risk. Recently, a cat in northern Germany was discovered with Bird Flu, prompting many to wonder whether pets - and by extension, owners - might be at risk.

Nabarro noted that it's quite likely that animals which feed on birds would be susceptible to the disease, thus regions in which dead birds are showing up should keep cats and other pets inside or tightly controlled. But there is still no information at this point that might suggest the illness is transmittable to humans from their pets.

Still, the next time the neighbor's tabby trots into my yard with a dying wren in its mouth, I'm going to play it safe and get the taser.
