Corticosteroid Nasal Sprays

Steroidal nasal sprays are available through prescription. This type of spray utilizes the anti-inflammatory effect to reduce swelling and congestion in the nasal passages and sinuses. Corticosteroid sprays decreases the number of histamine irritants in the nose. The irritants in the nose are the cause of post-nasal drip. Post-nasal drip causes mucous to accumulate in the back of the nose and throat which makes the sufferer feel like he/she is choking and can't breathe. Post-nasal drip can also cause one to have a chronic sore throat. Steroid sprays can help with this stuffy feeling. There are several brands on the market including Flonase, Nasacort and Rhinocort. Steroidal sprays usually take a week to ten days for the user to feel obvious relief. Steroid sprays may be use on an extended basis without damaging the membranes in the nose. It is recommended to blow your nose first before using any nasal spray! After using, clean the pump and do not share the medication with anyone else's NOSE!

Rhinocort: The active ingredient in Rhioncort is budesonide. If you are prescribed this spray, you need to let your physician know if you suffer from diabetes, glaucoma, pregnant, breast-feeding, Cushing's syndrome or eye or sinus infections. As with all sprays, one or two pumps of the medicine is sufficient. Hold your head upright before spraying the medicine in your nose. After using Rhinocort or any spray, should you have an allergic reaction (chest tightness, swelling of the lips, tongue or eyelids) then let your doctor know ASAP and discontinue use.

Flonase: This nasal spray is a corticosteroid that treats nasal symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, itching, runny or stuffy nose. If you suffer side-effects such as blurred vision, nosebleeds, stomach pain or dizziness, let your physician know. The active ingredient in Flonase is fluticasone.

Nasacort: The active ingredient in this nasal spray is triamcinolone. The active ingredient is Nasacort is similar to the natural steroid hormone produced in your adrenal gland. Nasacort is not yet available in generic form. There are several conditions you need to let your physician know about if he is prescribing Nasacort to relieve your allergy symptoms. Diabetes, blood clotting problems, high blood pressure, mental problems, osteoporosis and thyroid issues are just a few of the medical conditions you need to apprise your doctor of before he prescribes Nasacort.

Nasonex: This spray is the only prescription nasal spray treatment that is approved to treated and help prevent congestion and other seasonal nasal allergy symptoms. The treatment needs to begin 2 to 4 weeks before the anticipated onset of allergy triggers.

Decongestant Nasal Sprays

Decongestant sprays are available over-the-counter. They quickly open nasal passages by constricting blood vessel in the lining of the nose. It is not recommended that one use decongestant sprays on a prolonged basis. These types of sprays can damage the mucous membranes in the nose. The membranes are delicate tissue located in the nose. If decongestants are overused, then the allergy symptom you are trying to relieve can actually become worse. It is called the "rebound" effect. There are several types of decongestant sprays available including Afrin. Nasal decongestants are effective in opening the entrances to the sinus cavities and relieve sinus pressure that we commonly call a sinus headache.

Afrin: Afrin is very effective in relieving the user of sinus symptoms. This over-the-counter spray is often used in conjunction with nasal-type surgeries to open sinuses before an operation. It is also used when someone has sinus infections to give open the nasal passages before other sprays are used.

Astelin: This prescription antihistamine nasal spray treats seasonal allergic rhinitis and non allergic vasomotor rhinitis. It is well tolerated and relieves even difficult to treat nasal congestion.

Saline Sprays: These sprays are available over-the-counter and are used to relieve irritated nostrils and moisturize dry noses. Nasal sprays can be used as a preventive measure to keep irritants such as pollen out of the nasal passages.

If you are an allergy sufferer, it is crucial to get your allergies and symptoms under control. Once a reaction begins, the allergy attack triggers other chemicals in the body to keep the cycle going. It is important to try to identify your allergy triggers and the times of the year when your symptoms are the worst. Combining nasal sprays with oral antihistamines is a proven way to take control of your allergies.

Back Safety Overview

Have you noticed when you lifted something a little heavy you felt a twinge in your back? You ignore it at first until a couple of days later when you start feeling a lot of pain in your back. Now you know something happened. You more than likely suffered from some kind of back injury. The only problem is you are not sure where the pain is located. You take pain medication for it thinking this will alleviate the pain for a while. It does but only temporarily. What now? Perhaps a visit to the chiropractor is in order. A visit to your chiropractor will find the source of your problem and he will recommend certain steps for your back to get healed. One thing he will probably recommend is back safety. Just why is back safety so important? This is because back injuries are:

•	Very painful: Face it, by having a back ailment you know it because you are always in pain. No matter which way you turn your back, you feel pain. And it may even get worse when you get up in the morning from sleeping. Taking pain pills only dampens the pain, it doesn't eliminate it.
•	Lifetime disability: Having back problems can be a long time disability. Once you get it, even if your chiropractor fixes the problem momentarily, you will not keep it that way long. That is the problem with back injuries. In some cases, you may not be able to cure it at all. It really depends on the severity of the injury and where it is.
•	Expensive to treat: Have you been to a chiropractor recently. They aren't cheap. They cost just as much as a regular doctor or more, since they are specialist. The only thing you can hope for is that you have medical insurance to cover it. If you don't you will get a large bill. And what if your treatments have to be on a weekly basis, maybe three times a week. This will add up quickly.

About Back Safety and Back Injuries

More than one million workers suffer from back pain and injuries every year. As a matter of fact, many workers compensation claims are a result of back injuries. Obviously, back injuries can be very painful. And they can be difficult to heal. If you ever had a back injury you know how it affects everything you do in life. And what is more alarming is that when you have one form of back injury, you could stand to get another. This is why it is important to know how back injuries occur so you can avoid them as much as possible. Here are some things you should know about back injuries and why they occur:

•	The spine: Do you know the spine is made up of many small bone referred to as vertebrae. These are bones that are stacked on top of each other. Between each vertebra is a cushion called a disc. The vertebrae are held together by ligaments and muscles that are held there by tendons. There are openings in each vertebra that line up to form a canal that is hollow. The spinal cord runs through this hollow space. Then nerves that are attached to the spinal cord branch out through the holes in the vertebrae. The body is made in such a way that the lower part of the back takes the blunt of the body's weight. Because of this, if there was any kind of problem, minor or major, is felt here.
•	Injury types: Whether you know this or not, every time you bend over, lift a heavy object, or even sit and lean forward, you put stress and pressure on your back and spine. If this habit continues over time, you could be in for some serious trouble. This is because those areas of the back, including the disc and tendons, wear out and go through degeneration. Eventually this can cause discs to collapse or herniated. Many injuries to the back are caused by ligaments tearing or being strained.

Causes of Back Pain

There are various things that you can do to your body that can cause back pain and back injuries. Some of these things are easily, some require effort. The bottom line is learning these causes so you can take the steps necessary to avoid them. Here are the many things that can cause back pain:

•	Poor posture: This is something most people have because no one really knows the proper way to hold their body. If you stand, sit, or lie down incorrectly, you can put a strain on your spine. The best position for your spine is when it is in a natural S position. Anything beyond this will cause you pain.
•	Out of shape: Another area that can affect your back is your overall shape. If you are not in good physical condition and your muscles are weak, you can suffer from back pain and injuries quickly. And if you are overweight, you can put even more strain on your back.
•	Tension and stress: Do you notice that when you are tense or under stress your back seems to be in pain? This is because when you are under tension or stress, your muscles tighten or knot up. This can cause muscle spasms and back pain.
•	Aging and disease: As we age, our muscles begin to lose their strength and ability to function. Because of this, your spine can slip causing you a lot of pain.
•	Accidents: Also being in an accident can cause back pain. You can suffer from whiplash and much more severe back pain.

How to Perform Back Safety So As To Protect Yourself

There are steps you can take to protect yourself and back from getting hurt. It is just a matter of using commonsense and logic in some situations. You also need to be very observant and perform critical thinking. Here are some steps you can take to prevent back injuries and pain:

•	Before you lift anything assess the situation: Before you take the steps to pick up any kind of object, take a look at the object to be picked up, especially where it is, how it is positioned, and how it will need to be picked up. Here are some things to think about:
o	How far will you have to take the object?
o	Is the path you need to travel going to be free and clear of any debris or anything else that may interfere in your progress?
o	Will you need to have any doors opened? If so, can you get someone to open the door for you?
o	Once you have the object in your hands, can you see in front of you?
o	Is it possible you can take the object and break it down into pieces or units to make carrying it easier?
•	Before Lifting: Before you start to pick up the object, take a look at it. Pick up one end slowly to see if it is heavy or not. If it is too heavy, don't go any further. Get help to lift it. Or use some kind of cart or handcart to carry it. Make sure to use gloves so you can get a good grip on the object.
•	How to lift the object: Now that you have prepared the object and have decided it is safe to lift it, take the following steps to lift the object. Remember, never use your back to lift:
o	Put your feet close to the object. Make sure you have good footing before you begin.
o	Next you want to make sure to center your body weight over your feet.
o	Next you want to squat down like you are going to lift weights, bending your knees. Don't forget to keep your back straight and let your legs do the lifting.
o	Take a hold of the object and bring it close to you.
o	Now, with a smooth movement, lift the object straight up, raising your body slowly to an upright position. Do not twist your body, nor keep your head down.
•	How to carry the object: The most important tips to remember here is to keep your back straight or maybe slightly arched. Don't walk fast. Instead walk slowly but deliberately. Always use your feet to change direction you need to go not your back. Do not lean over or lift the object over your head.
•	How to set the object down: When setting the object down just do the reverse when you picked up the object. Just position yourself where the object will be placed. Squat down, letting your legs do the work. Also keep your head up and don't twist your back. Once the load is just slightly off the floor, let it go.

Getting a Tan Overview

Why is it that teenage girls will wait in line for an hour to lie in a tanning bed a week before prom? Why is the beach covered with sunbathers once the summer sun really comes out? Why have self-tanners become part of such a huge industry in the past few years? Getting a tan is considered to have many benefits in modern western culture - most of them pertaining to fashion. Bronzed bodies generally look thinner and more fit than those that are pale, and they look great in the shorts and tank tops of summer. Getting a tan also dries out the skin, good for those experiencing oily skin and acne. Other benefits claimed for lying in UV rays are relaxation, stress reduction, and sinus relief.

However, getting a tan also has its dangers, including sunburn, premature wrinkling, skin discoloration, sun sensitivity, immune system suppression, eye damage, and skin cancer. UV radiation - while ok in smaller doses - can be dangerous and even fatal when humans spend too much time in it. Because of this, various ways (relatively safe) of getting a tan have developed.

•	Traditional tanning in the sun - in small increments with sunscreen
•	Tanning in tanning beds - in a controlled amount of time and with proper eyewear
•	Self-tanning lotions - used to color skin for a week or more
•	Airbrush tanning - in a booth where a machine or professional can apply the temporary tan

The key to getting a tan is choosing the method that works best for you and attempting to be as safe with it as you can be. Also, you can choose to eat and use foods that are known for helping your body tan, keeping it healthy, and otherwise being of assistance in getting a tan.

What is a tan?

What is a tan, really? The color has to come from somewhere. Skin tans when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) and reacts by producing melanin - the substance which makes us dark. There are actually two types of UV rays - UVA and UVB - and both have the ability to damage your skin. (Really, any tan at all is a sign of skin damage; however, many experts agree that a balanced tan, obtained only from limited exposure to the rays and with the use of sunscreen, will probably not be detrimental.)

Option #1 - Traditional Sun-Tanning

When dreaming about the perfect vacation, many people picture hours spent lying in the sun, listening to the ocean waves crash against the shore. Tanning - as its often called - is not only the technical process of allowing UV rays to darken your skin; it is also a process of relaxation where your stress can melt away with the sun's warmth. However, don't get too comfortable on that beach towel! While getting a tan from the sun won't necessarily kill you, it does have the potential to be very harmful if you're not careful.

If you're going to lie in the sun and get a tan, determine your skin type first. Getting a sunburn is not only painful but also very bad for your skin, so your goal should be to avoid it all costs. The darker your skin is, the longer you can stay in the sun without getting burned. People with very light skin tones could be burned within 15 minutes if they aren't using sunscreen - so be careful! Those with pale complexions should use a sunscreen with an SPF of around 30 (Sun Protection Factor). Individuals with darker skin tones may be fine using sunscreen with SPFs as low as 4. If you're not sure about what type of skin you have, ask a dermatologist or the pharmacist at your local drug store.

Other ways to prevent burning and thus get a safer and even tan instead (since sunburn doesn't help your tan but rather causes skin dryness, loss of elasticity, and sunspots) are to limit your skin's exposure to sunlight to only a couple hours at a time, and try to plan those for parts of the day other than 10:00 am to 2:00 pm - which is when the sun's UV rays are the strongest. Also, make sure that you're not on any medications that make your skin more prone to burn (many antibiotics, antidepressants, etc. have this side effect). If you're going to be out in the sun for a long time, make sure your sunscreen is waterproof, reapply it regularly, wear light and loose-fitting clothes, don a hat (to protect that delicate face from burn!), and wear sunglasses (to prevent cornea damage).

If you're starting to get scared that all of these precautions will keep you from tanning at all, rest at ease. It is still possible to tan this way; it will just be a safer tan and will actually look better. If you do feel like you got even a little bit of burn, treat it immediately, and refuse to let the burn get worse by prolonging the exposure to the UV rays. Also, remember to moisturize thoroughly (healthy, moist skin tans much better than dry skin!), and try eating foods that are known to help you tan (like mangos, peaches, melons, fish, raw carrots, eggs, olive oil, and more).

Option #2 - Tanning Salons

In addition to lying in the sun, there is another UV-exposure tanning system available that allows you to keep up your glow even in the winter months - tanning salons. Tanning beds, though people sometimes dog them as "weird" and "scary," are considered by some to be very relaxing and comfortable experiences. You (and the salon attendant) can choose how long you want to tan - helping you just to tan and not burn, and there are fans to cool you while tanning and radios to listen to. Many people feel so relaxed in the warmth that they fall asleep for their 15 minutes, waking up only when the machine turns off.

There are many debates about the safety of tanning beds, and research seems to aid opposing sides of the argument. However, evidence seems to show that (1) the UV rays in tanning beds could be more dangerous to the skin than the sun's rays, but (2) since you spend much less time in the bed and can determine the type of UV rays you receive, it can be safer, and (3) in general you're going to get about the same effect as far as skin safety is concerned (both real sun and fake sun are proven to increase your risk of skin cancer).

If you want to get your tan at a salon, do these things first:

•	Ensure that the tanning salon of your choice disinfects the beds thoroughly between users.
•	Use the FDA regulated tanning goggles. These protect your eyes from severe damage and possible loss of sight (without giving you raccoon eyes).
•	Make sure that you moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
•	Don't go overboard! Not everyone's skin was meant to be olive. Try to keep it natural, and balance your time. There's no need to do more to increase the risk of skin cancer.

Option #3 - Sunless Tanning

In past years, no-sun tanning or self-tanning had a bad reputation because of the streaky or orange results that sometimes turned up. However, recent improvements have made sunless tanning not only very convincing but also the safest available option for tanning (Though it's more expensive than just lying in the sun, your skin will thank you!). There are two major types of sunless tanning available:

•	Self-Tanners. These can be lotions, gels, or sprays that you can apply on your own. You just pick out the shade you want and rub it on. Only downside is that you often have to learn the trick of applying it, so that you don't get blotchy. Basically, just exfoliate your skin, dry it off completely, apply the tanner of your choice (using less around areas like the knees and hands), wait about 30 minutes for the color to develop, and do it again in a week or so.
•	Spray Tanning. With this "tanning" method, you walk into a salon, either take off all of your clothes or everything but a bathing suit, and get sprayed with a product that helps your skin darken quickly. There are several different types of spray tanning: some people use the booths that spray while you move about; others have a professional use an airbrush on them, giving an even more convincing look. If you moisturize properly after getting a spray tan, your tan will last for at least 7 days and up to 2 weeks.

Stress Management Overview

You probably have been under stress of one kind or another in your life. Whether you had a job change or you just got a divorce, the fact is stress is part of our daily lives. No matter who we are or what we do in life, we are surrounded by events that cause us to undergo stress. While some stress is good, other kinds of stress is bad for it leads to health problems like ulcers and other ailments. Dealing with stress is very important. That is why there are so many books written on the subject. You could probably take a course or two about it. If you do you will notice the central theme around it all and that is it deals with stress management. We hear all this talk about relieving stress but we don't realize what causes it. Here are some areas that can affect our lives and put stress on us:

•	Loss of employment: Losing ones job is very stressful, because you know that that weekly or bi-weekly check has stopped, which also means you have to swallow your pride and start hitting the pavement again to find another job. This obviously is not an easy task considering what you have to go through to deal with it. But you know you have to. But the thought of having no money to pay your bills, food, or for anything else can put a lot of stress on you.
•	Divorce: This is no doubt a great stressor. Divorce is not easy. You are telling the person you've been with for whatever time frame it was that you don't want to be together anymore. This not only hurts the one but it also hurts the other, plus the kids, if there are any. So no doubt going through a divorce is very stressful.
