Before we discuss the types of hair removal, it helps to know about the different types of hair. All hair is made of keratin, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and toenails. We have two different types of hair on our bodies: vellus hair and terminal hair. Vellus hair is soft, fine, and short and is located on the chest, back and face. Vellus hair functions to regulate body temperature and to provide insulation. Terminal hair is coarser, longer, and darker than vellus hair and can be found on the chest, back, and legs. Its job is to provide cushioning and protection.
