» Shaving
How it Works- Shaving is a fairly simple process. With the use of a razor, you remove the portion of hair that has grown above the skin’s surface. The results of shaving typically last 1-3 days. There are several different types of razors to choose from: disposable, manual, or electric.
Cost- Shaving is fairly inexpensive depending on the type of razor and blades that you decide to use. Manual razors and blades typically cost between $1 and $25.
Advantages- Shaving can be done anywhere. The only supplies required are a razor with a blade, shaving cream, and water. It is relatively inexpensive, and since you can do it yourself, you can save yourself a trip to the salon. Shaving is also virtually painless, with the exception of the occasional cut.
Disadvantages- Razor burn is an unfortunate side effect of shaving that can leave you with unsightly and irritating red bumps. Shaving can also lead to ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs occur when the hair grows into the surrounding tissue instead of out of the follicle. As the hair grows into the skin, redness, irritation, and swelling can occur. You might also feel inconvenienced by how quickly hair grows back or by how often you have to replace the blade in your razor.
Tips-
· To help minimize cuts and nicks, look for a razor with safety guards around the blades.
· To get a closer shave, shave in the shower after your hair has had an opportunity to soften.
· Change the blade in your razor frequently to avoid nicks and razor burn.
· To avoid ingrown hairs, it may be advisable to shave in the direction that your hair grows. If you already have ingrown hairs, you can treat them by exfoliating and then plucking out the hair with a sterilized tweezers.
