There are several ways to get rid of unwanted facial hair. These methods range from inexpensive drug store methods to the expensive permanent or semi-permanent methods. The following is a description of different facial hair removing methods with the average cost associated to each.

·        Depilatories: These products come in either cream or lotion form and remove facial hair when applied to the skin and left on for an instructed amount of time. While on the skin the active ingredients work to weaken and loosen the hair follicle. After leaving on the skin for the recommended amount of time the products are then wiped or washed off the skin which is when the hair is removed. These products are very effective for many women and the results last between 3 to 8 weeks depending on the individual. Before using one of these products it is best to test a small area to ensure there won’t be an allergic reaction. Women with sensitive skin may be better off only leaving the depilatory on their skin for a shortened amount of time. If any of these hair removers are left on the skin longer than the recommended time they could cause the products to burn the skin. Depilatories are typically not recommended for use on eyebrows. You can find these hair removal products in any drug store as well as cosmetics stores and typically cost between $10 and $50.
·        Wax: Waxing is probably one of the most used hair removal methods around. You can purchase at home waxes or have it performed by a professional. At home waxes can be found in either hot or cold versions. They can also come in pre-cut strips with the wax already in place as well as roll on waxes that look and function similar to roll on deodorants. Professional waxing varies in price depending on what area of the face it is being used on. The average price of a professional eyebrow wax is $15, an average professional lip wax is $10, and an average professional chin wax is $10. At home waxing allows you to perform the hair removal in the privacy of your own home and is wonderful for those who may be embarrassed to have it done professionally. The pre-cut strips and roll on waxes are perfect for those who do not have previous experience with waxing. At home waxing kits generally begin in price at $10 and can be purchased from any drug store. Waxing will last anywhere between 3 and 9 weeks. Individual results will vary on time lengths. Waxing is fairly painless but may cause reactions in sensitive skin such as waxing bumps or rashes.
·        Laser Hair Removal: Laser hair removal is performed by a trained professional. Lasers are used to deaden the hair follicle at the root and damage it so that hair will not return. Candidates for laser hair removal must have dark hair and should typically have lighter skin tones. Although women with darker pigmented skin can also see benefits from laser hair removal. Women with light hair are not candidates because the lasers only pick up on dark hair. Laser hair removal generally costs on average of $500 per treatment and takes 4 to 6 treatments to see full results. In some women the results may not be completely permanent. Laser hair removal is virtually pain free. Laser hair removal should not be performed on eyebrows or in between the eyes.
·        Electrolysis: This procedure is also performed by a trained professional. The process uses low levels of electricity to kill or inactivate the hair follicle. Electrolysis is not permanent but does last longer than many other hair removal methods. Finding a reputable professional is important because if done by an inexperience person electrolysis can cause scaring. There is some pain involved in the procedure due to a needle being used. Make sure that a new needle is used with each treatment. Electrolysis works best for women with blond or white facial hair and also on smaller areas. The treatment usually costs between $25 and $150 per treatment and can be done as often as every other week. Over time there should be a lessening of hair and ideally none growing back in its place. Electrolysis is good for removing hair on the eyebrow area, upper lip, chin, forehead, and cheeks.
