·        Barrel Size
The barrel is the main component of a curling iron. It actually determines what type of curls the iron will produce on your hair. The barrels come in a variety of different sizes from tiny to large. The smaller barrels will create tight, corkscrew like curls. As the barrel increases in size, so will the curls.  The larger barrel will create a loose shape that looks more like a wave than a precise curl. The size barrel you choose will largely depend on what style you wish to achieve and your particular type of hair. The barrel is what makes a curling iron such a fun tool. You can purchase more than one iron containing different barrel sizes. This will allow you to create more than one look at any given time.
·        Features
There are many additional features to look for in a curling iron. It is important to be familiar with all of the “extra” options available to be sure you find a curling iron that meets your particular needs. Typically the more features a curling iron contains, the more expensive it will be. This being said, it is a good idea to know exactly what you need from your curling iron and which options are not necessary. The cord of the curling iron plugs into the electrical outlet and is often times the first component that will cause problems for the user. This is mainly because of the strain that is put on it from the movement of the iron. Some curling irons add a reinforced cord that helps reduce these problems.

Another feature you might want to consider is a safety tip. This function is located on the opposite end of the curling iron from the cord. The safety tip is a protective covering that allows the operator to use both hands while curling their hair. Many individuals have difficulty maneuvering the curling iron with one hand and this safety feature makes the process much easier.

If you are known to frantically leave the house without remembering to turn off your curling iron then an automatic shut off feature is perfect for you. Some curling irons are designed to automatically turn off after a certain period of time. This is a safety feature that is extremely helpful for some individuals.

·        Heat Settings
Not all consumers desire the hottest iron available. The amount of heat needed from a curling iron largely depends on the hair type that is being curled. Not all hair types are able to withstand a great amount of heat. Heat settings are an important feature of a curling iron and should be looked at carefully. Some curling irons contain multiple heat settings. A thermostat controlled heat setting will allow the stylist to select the appropriate temperature needed for his or her particular hair type. Heat settings give the user total control on the amount of heat produced. Not all curling irons include this option in their package and it is definitely a feature that could help make the difference between damaged and healthy hair.
