Concealer can be a tricky tool. Use a little too much and it has smeared everywhere beyond hope; pick the wrong color, and you look like you have a skin disease. However, it can also be the best-kept secret of the make-up world, an absolute art when you learn how to use it properly. Here are some of the most common mistakes made when using concealer, mistakes that – with a little practice – you can avoid:

• Applying concealer straight from the tube. If you’re using stick concealer, you still need to use a brush or something else for its application. It will be much too heavy if you just put it straight on your face.
• Putting on too much. If you’re using it correctly, you shouldn’t be able to see the concealer at all. When people use too much, it gets sticky and doesn’t blend in.
• Picking the wrong color. It’s difficult to match up your skin tone exactly with your concealer; they come in fewer shades than foundation does. But if you end up with something too light, it will be very noticeable.
• Forgetting to blend. After applying it to the face, the concealer needs to be gently tapped rather than dragged across the skin. That will only make it smear, not blend.
• Using the wrong kind of concealer. Liquid concealers are the easiest to use; sticks should be used for dark circles needing a heavier coverage; pencils are for blemishes.
