Eyes are the focal point of the face and should be accented with a touch of color over the lids. While there are strict color rules regarding foundation and blush, you are allowed to be creative with eye shadows. With just a few steps you can use eye makeup to define your eyes and make them stand out. Use colors that are flattering to the shape and color of your eyes. Light colors highlight and dark colors cause your eyes to recede. Choose colors that are in contrast to your eye color.

Many eye shadows come in color coordinated duos, trios, or quads that help you to blend the right colors together. If you like bright colors, be careful that you do not apply them too dark causing an unnatural look.

Sharing eye makeup or brushes can transfer eye infections such as pink eye. If you wear contacts, be sure to tap off excess eye shadow from the brush before applying to your eyes. If you get eye makeup in your eyes, flush them immediately with warm water.

Eyeliner shapes and defines your eyes. Choose the color that is right for your eye color. If you have light colored eyes, choose a brown, navy or charcoal. Brown and plum work well for brown eyes. The liner should also be a complement to your eye shadow color.

Take the following steps to apply eyeliner:
• Eye liners come in the form of cake, liquid, and pencil. You can also use eye shadows for lining. If using a pencil eye liner, be sure it is sharp.
• Hold your head back slightly and open your eyes to a half open status.
• Draw a line across the upper lid, just above the lashes. Start from the inside corner moving to the outside corner of your eye.
• If using a brush or eye pencil, smudge the liner with the brush or cotton swab to soften the look.
• To line the lower lid, start at the outside edge and draw a line to the outer two-thirds of the lid. Do not put the color on the actual inside of the eye lid.

Mascara is an effective way to make your eyes look larger and emphasize your lashes. When it comes to buying mascara there are brands that lengthen, darken, thicken, and add volume to your lashes. Mascara comes in regular and waterproof.

Take the following steps to apply mascara:
• Do not pump the wand as this will dry out the mascara. Twirl the brush to coat with mascara.
• To apply mascara to the upper lashes, wiggle the mascara wand back and forth starting at the base of the lashes rolling through to the end of the lashes. Be sure that the lashes are coated from the roots to the tips.
• To apply mascara to the lower lashes, hold the wand vertically running it from side to side along the lashes.
