A pressure washer basically transforms an ordinary garden hose from a slow moving stream of water to a canyon cleaning river. Finding a selection of pressure washers is easy, but there are a few things you should know before you purchase, such as water pressure, gallons per minute and price.

How much water pressure you’ll need depends on what you are trying to accomplish. A typical garden hose emits 40 pounds per square inch of water pressure. A garden hose can wash away winter dirt and dust, but it doesn’t have enough power to actually clean anything without using the old-fashioned elbow grease.

The most basic light-duty, 1300 – 2000 PSIs, pressure washer is 30 times more powerful and just as versatile as a garden hose. It can clean boats patio furniture, siding and sidewalks with less time, effort and water.

A medium-duty pressure washer, 2000 – 2600 PSIs, is needed if you plan to blast away grease and grime or a heavy duty model, 2700 – 4000 PSIs, if you plan to remove stubborn concrete stains or strip surfaces for repainting or restaining.

Deciding which pressure washer to purchase can be a daunting task. There are so many sizes of washer from many different companies. If you purchase a washer that isn't powerful enough for your needs it will not be useful. If you decide on a unit that is too powerful you will spend more money than was necessary and may even damage the surfaces you want to clean.
