There have been many known accidents that have surrounded private swimming pools and yet many have still not been safe guarded against the possibility of another one. What is the most effective way to enjoy the pool yet be safe?
One website can offer all the information you need to know, www.aap.org/family/tipppool.htm but here are a few ideas on how to ensure safety procedures are in place:
· Keep safety equipment nearby like lifejackets
· A benefit of public pools is all lifeguards are trained should the worst occur, it is best that someone is on hand at all times that has the necessary first aid training
· Install a fence at least 5 foot high with high latches to prevent children wondering into the pool area
· Never leave children unattended because it has been proved that children under 5 are at most risk from drowning
· If you eat before swimming then wait for about an hour before you can enter the water safely
· Don’t leave pool toys in the water, this can lure young children back
Top Tip: The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) recommend that if and when you purchase a safety cover for the pool, it needs to be in line with all their standards expected of safety equipment.
