Drip irrigation systems can normally be installed by most homeowners. However, it is advisable for you to hire a professional to install most sprinkler systems. There are complex calculations that must be made, the type of soil must be determined, and a design of the system must be created to fit the landscaping needs. If you are planning to install the system yourself, inquire as to the inspection codes for your area.
Keep the following pointers in mind when hiring a contractor:
• A professional will carry insurance that protects you and your property.
• Check to see if the contractor is licensed and experienced.
• Do not be afraid to ask a contractor for references. Make telephone inquiries of the references as to their satisfaction with the work the contractor performed.
• A professional contractor will provide you with a written proposal before beginning any work.
• Insist on a written contract which includes the following information:
o Name, address, and telephone number of the contractor.
o Cost of materials for which you will be responsible.
o Guarantee of work and materials.
o Complete description of work the contractor will perform.
o Date services will begin and an estimated date of completion.
o Notice of cancellation informing you that you have three days to cancel the contract.
If the contractor does not show up for scheduled meetings, looks unprofessional or appears to be disorganized you should be concerned about his professionalism. Be suspicious of a bid that seems too good to be true.
