Basic
grilling tools are ideal in part because you need no lesson on how to use them. If you want to move beyond the basic
grilling tools, however, the next step is to purchase and use
grilling tools that take some instruction to use but that you can still use for a variety of foods:
· Skewers: Skewers are long sticks of stainless steel or bamboo on which you can place small cuts of meat or vegetables; they work especially well for
grilling kabobs. Look for skewers with a flat blade rather than a rounded column for the meat, and remember than many skewers heat up as you use them, so you will need to use a
grilling mitt.
· Griddle: A griddle turns your grill into a stovetop, on which you can cook anything from salmon to scrambled eggs. You can also purchase modified griddles (also known as grill woks) that have small holes; either model keeps small items from falling beneath the cooking grate.
· Grilling Basket: Put vegetables and other small items in a
grilling basket so that you can flip the whole basket once rather than each individual item separately.
· Thermometer: Test whether your items have finished cooking by using the thermometer to check the temperature of your meats. Without a thermometer, you will either need to guess or cut into your meats to determine if they are done.
· Basting Brush: Baste your
grilling items with melted butter or a marinade using a basting brush, which is easy to use and very effective.
· Woodchips: If you love the flavor of food smoked over wood, purchase woodchips and burn them underneath the
grilling foods.
· Rib Rack: Ribs, chicken quarters, and other items can quickly fill up your grill, but a rib rack allows them to cook vertically, thus saving you considerable space on the grill.
As you advance in your
grilling skills, you may want to purchase a specialized grill cookbook in addition to these other tools. Grill cookbooks give suggestions on marinades and cooking times so that you can both expand your
grilling repertoire and improve on the dishes you already grill.
