As has been previously inferred, sundial construction involves math. This might frighten some enough that they decide the attempt isn’t worth it; but consider that you don’t have to be the one to do the math. Some websites exist that run the tougher calculations for you, for the trouble of inputting information like your time zone and zip code. Determining things like declination and latitude seem like the types of skills reserved for night sailors and our predecessors in antiquity; but much of the brass-tacks legwork has already been done. Thus, the construction of a sundial has become something even school children can undertake with success.
