A sundial’s accuracy depends on several variables, apart from its positioning and construction. Local time and standard or ‘mean’ time are different. At different times of year the local, solar time can be either ahead of or behind clock time. Therefore it is incumbent upon the serious designer to construct a sundial intended for the place, as latitude and longitude are different for everyone. This is not as difficult as it might sound, and several useful programs are out there to aid one in doing the calculations. If one’s only desire is a pretty focal point, by all means buy the ready-made sundial and place it anywhere that suits you. But for those who want something that is useful as well as lovely, the extra effort is well worth it.
