An important aspect of owning fountains is their cleaning and maintenance. Fortunately, indoor fountains are quite easy to keep in good condition. Little bacteria or debris is introduced into the water, and changes in weather are minimal if a problem at all. However, if you are considering purchasing an outdoor fountain, be aware of the cleaning and maintenance process involved.   Being knowledgeable of the most effective ways to clean and preserve your beautiful piece is the easiest way to ensure that it continues to work for years.

Your fountain should be cleaned every four to six months. This process includes changing the water and cleaning the pump and other accessories as well as the fountain itself. If you have a small fountain without a pump, you have several options as to how to clean and dispose of the old dirty water. Some small fountains are designed with drains that unplug and allow the water to disperse. If your particular fountain is not made with a drain, you can get rid of the water another way, such as scooping it out with a cup, tipping the fountain and dumping out the water, etc. If your fountain is large and does not have a pump (and you do not wish to purchase one), siphoning the water is another option. However, you should be careful not to get any of the water into your mouth, since it has certainly acquired many germs and much filth. After the fountain has been cleaned, it is recommended that water treatments be added to the new water. This will keep it cleaner and fresher as time passes.

Another important part of the maintenance involved with your fountain is taking care of it in the winter. Most fountains are designed to withstand cold weather, but there is still a possibility that the cold will cause damage. Aside from high winds and winter storms, your fountain will face another danger. When the water temperature reaches freezing and the water in the basin turns solid, the bowl or pump may crack. There are several available options to prevent this from happening.
-         You can dissemble the fountain and store it for the winter season. For best results, do this before the first freeze as to prevent any opportunity for the fountain to crack.
-         Another option is to cover the basin with a tarp or another cover and then to fill the basin with an absorbent material that will soak up any condensation.

These simple precautions and cleaning techniques will keep your fountains safe during the harsh winter season and all year round.
