» When should I display the American flag?
Especially since September 11, 2001, the American flag seems almost omnipresent in the United States. Lapel pins, corporate logs, bumper stickers, and clothing are only a few of the ways in which the flag appears. Many people thus display the flag constantly, but there are also certain occasions on which the American flag should appear regardless of personal preferences.
· During the National Anthem—When “The Star-Spangled Banner” plays, the flag should be present so that the audience can face and salute the flag with their hand over their heart.
· During the Pledge of Allegiance—The Pledge of Allegiance begins, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.”
· Federal Holidays—The American flag can be flown on any day of the year, but it is especially appropriate on federal holidays, from Martin Luther King Day in January to Christmas Day in December.
· Parades—Community parades should include a flag, especially if it is an Independence Day parade on the Fourth of July.
· Schools and Public Institutions—Government offices, such as postal centers and revenue offices, should display the American flag, but many churches, civic clubs, and schools, often display the flag as well.
· Upon Presidential Orders—The President may declare a special time to post the flag. In addition, either the President or the Governor can make a declaration after a tragedy requiring flags be flown at half-mast.
There is no limit to the times at which you can fly a flag as long as it is done with respect. You will see the flag at sporting events and public meetings and inside auditoriums or restaurants.
