Caring for a flag

Whether you have an American flag or any other kind of flag, you can lengthen the life of your flag by taking some simple steps to protect your flag. Certainly, it will be much easier to take care of a flag that you keep indoors rather than one you keep outdoors, but even an outdoor flag is relatively easy to maintain.

First of all, use care when deciding when and where to fly your flag. Avoid flying your flag in rain or snow. If you can, place your flag in a location that will ensure it will blow clear of electric wires, tree branches, buildings, and other flags.

Before you fly your flag and after you bring it down, briefly inspect it to see if it has sustained any damage during the day. If the flag is wet, set it out and let it air dry completely. If there are torn or frayed edges, you can trim or re-hem those edges.

If your flag becomes dirty (which it likely will, even if it never touches the ground) handwash it using warm water and soap. Do not, however, soak your flag in water. You can also take your flag to a dry cleaner; some dry cleaners might even clean an American flag for free.

If you purchase a new American flag and wish to dispose of your old one, the American Flag Code specifies that you should dispose of your flag in a dignified way. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts or American Legion may do this for you, otherwise, you can burn your flag in private. Do not simply throw your flag into the garbage.
