How to Install a Doorbell

Doorbells are simple and beneficial devices for most homes. However, if considering purchasing one and installing it yourself, be sure to thoroughly read the directions of your specific doorbell before you begin the process. For most single-button doorbells, the following instructions will help you put the new device in.

-   Wire the Transformer to the Junction Box: After ensuring that you are not hooked up to any power, attach the transformer to the junction box, usually located by the fuse box. (If you are not familiar with these terms, don’t worry! There will be more explicit instructions in your manufacture’s packet, probably with pictures.)   Insert the transformer wires into the fuse box, using wire connecters to join one transformer wire to a black cable wire and the other to a white cable wire.

-         Mount the Button, and Connect the Wires: Drill three holes in the doorbell button for (1) wires, (2) the terminal screw, and (3) the mounting screw. Connect the bell wires from the transformer and the sound source to the terminal screw in the button. Using a screwdriver, fasten the button to the mounting screw hole.

-         Hang the Bell: Drill holes for mounting screws at the corners of the unit and a hole for wire access. Attach the doorbell to the wall at least six feet above floor level. Attach the transformer and door button wires to the correct places marked by the manufacturer.

-         Ring the bell: To ensure that everything is working, ring the bell before attaching the cover for the bell unit. This will save you time and trouble if something was not wired correctly.

Always make sure to use the instructions when installing the doorbell; however, if there is still confusion over how to do it, take it to a local hardware store and ask someone how to install it. Taking it to a professional will help clear up a lot of questions.
