• Arrange your lights carefully. The lights on certain sets can generate a significant amount of heat and this should be taken into consideration when deciding where to position your lights. Make sure and keep you lights clear of any decorations and other flammable materials.

• Do not leave the lights on when you are out of the house or when you go to bed. A short in the wiring can cause fire. To avoid forgetting to turn your lights off, there are timers that you can attach to you lights to turn them on and off automatically at a certain time.

• Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord.

• Only use lights that have been tested for safety. You can tell if they have been by finding the label from an independent testing laboratory that should be located on the lights.

• Check each set of lights, whether they are new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Discard any damaged sets or repair them before using.
