Starting a Fire

If you are using standard charcoal, make a pyramid of the briquettes in the center of the charcoal grate, and pour lighter fluid on the briquettes. After waiting five minutes, apply a thin second coat of fluid, and then light the briquettes. Let the fire burn, and when the briquettes become covered with gray ash, spread them evenly across the grill, and begin grilling.

If your charcoal already has lighter fluid in it, put the charcoal into a large metal coffee can with holes. Then, light the charcoal and let it burn for five or ten minutes before spreading the coals. Be careful though, the coffee can will be very hot, so don’t use your hands to lift it.

Finally, if you don’t want to use lighter fluid, purchase a chimney starter and place two rings of newspaper at the bottom of the starter. Then, add charcoal and light the newspaper, rather than the briquettes, in several places. Let the charcoal burn like normal and then spread it below the cooking grate and begin grilling.
