The most basic safety rule when operating any grill is to remember that you are quite literally playing with fire. Keep children away from the grill, and keep your hands away from the fire. If you have older children, teach them the proper way to start a fire and use a charcoal grill.
Be especially careful in using fluids to help ignite your flames. Limit the amount of lighter fluid you put on the charcoal briquettes and do not put fluid onto the coals. In addition, never use gasoline to start a fire in your charcoal grill.
Finally, when you cook, it is a good idea to pull the grill a few feet away from any walls. Don’t leave the fire unattended for any extended period of time, but still make sure that you allow your food plenty of time to properly cook.
