A birdbath allows you to enjoy from your own window the natural entertainment that comes from watching birds play and listening to them sing. Whether your favorite species is the hummingbird, cardinal, bluebird, or something more exotic, a birdbath is likely the way to attract it.

Birds appreciate and use birdbaths because, like humans, they need water for bathing and drinking. Therefore, a prominent birdbath provides sustenance for the birds, and as birds learn of your birdbath, they will return to it and bring their friends. If you add a bird feeder and birdhouse to your birdbath, you will be able to meet each of a bird’s basic needs: water, food, and shelter.

According to some birdwatchers, however, birdbaths are more fun than feeders or houses. Birdbaths attract a wider range of bird species than do bird feeders because all birds need water but only some species eat seed. In addition, much of the birdhouse action takes place inside and away from your eyes, but a birdbath allows you to see the birds the whole time.
