When you shop for a birdbath, it is important to purchase a birdbath with which you are happy, but it is even more important to purchase a birdbath with which the birds will be happy. Look for some of the following characteristics in your birdbath.
• Shallow: A quality birdbath is no more than three inches deep, and the best birdbaths are even less than three inches deep near the edges. If you already have a birdbath that is too shallow, don’t worry; simply add some rocks to the bottom to decrease the depth.
• Rough Bottom: A shiny, slick bottom deters birds from your birdbath while birdbaths made of cement or other rough materials will ease the bird’s mind. If you have a slippery birdbath, add rocks or non-skid stickers, or use sandpaper to rough up the bottom.
• Good Construction: As best as you can, look closely over the birdbath to determine if there are any cracks or stains on the bath. In addition, look to see if there is any kind of warranty offered.
• Secure Basin: The basin of your birdbath should fit securely onto the pedestal so that neither your dog nor the wind can knock it off. In addition, the basin should be high enough that animals other than birds can’t get into it.
