If you seem to have trouble attracting birds to your birdbath, there are a few simple tactics you can try to make sure it is welcoming to the birds. First, make sure it is always filled with clean water. During the summer, the water in your birdbath will quickly evaporate while in the winter it may freeze, so keep an eye out year round to make sure you have a full bath. in addition, maintain a clean birdbath so that birds won’t be deterred by disease or dirt.
A birdbath that has a constant drip also attracts many species, particularly species such as hummingbirds that prefer moving water to tepid water. Some fancy birdbaths have built-in drippers, but you can also make your own dripper using a small fountain, a hose, or an empty milk jug with holes in the top and bottom. The drip can come from the birdbath, go into the birdbath, or simply be next to the birdbath.
If after all your efforts, you still can’t attract any birds, you may need to take more drastic measures. Try moving your birdbath to a new location, changing the water, and complementing your bath with a birdfeeder. You may, of course, simply live in an area with few bathing birds. Don’t give up hope, though, the birds may simply be wary of a new bath; they’ll likely come soon.
