A clean bird feeder helps to ensure that your birds will stay healthy and will not pass diseases to each other or endanger your family at all. The presence of mold on your feeder is especially dangerous for birds, and it grows quickly on poorly maintained feeders.
Once a month, you should clean your bird feeder(s) using a solution of one part bleach and ten parts water. If you have a tube feeder, let the solution sit inside the feeder, but you should scrub a platform feeder using a damp rag. If you have moldy spots on your bird feeder, scrub them a little extra, regardless of what type of feeder you have.
After washing the feeder, rinse it, and then let it completely dry before displaying it again. In addition, throw out any wet birdseed that you have and restock your feeder with dry seed. Don’t throw out dry seed unless the birds seem to be ignoring the food, and it has sat untouched for a considerable amount of time.
If you have hummingbird or oriole feeders, take special care to clean the feeder ports well, and make sure to change the nectar inside the feeder every few days.
