Office cubicles are often ridiculed, but they would not be so common if they did not have many sizable advantages. Cubicles have advantages over each of their major rivals—the traditional office and the open workspace.

The two main advantages that a cubicle has over a traditional office are its economy and flexibility. While cubicles are expensive, installing them does not require extensive remodeling or construction, nor does it require the expenses of walls, windows and fancy desks. In addition, cubicle arrangements can be arranged or changed very simply. Once you build an office with walls, windows, and doors, it will always be an office, but a cubicle can be easily expanded or shrunk, and even moved to another area of the office.

In many cases, however, a cubicle’s main competition comes from the open workspace—the large room with long rows of desks and tables. Many companies believe that cube farms greatly reduce the noise and distraction of the open workplace, which in turn helps employees to concentrate on work. In addition, the partitions in a cubicle (which are not present in an open workplace) are useful space for items such as shelves, calendars, notes, and spreadsheets.

Not every office needs to convert to cubicles, but some companies feel that the economy, flexibility, and utility of the cubicle make it superior to either of the other primary workspace options.
