» How can I make my Office Cubicle feel more personal?
The cubicle may be good for the company, but to many employees, it seems an impersonal and inhospitable workplace. Consider employing some of these tips to make yourself more at home in your cubicle:
- Decorate your cubicle: Take advantage of the fact that you do have some personal space by bringing pictures, diplomas, or other items to personalize your workspace. Make sure that you decorate tastefully and professionally (compare your cubicle decoration to that of other employees), and make your cubicle a little more like home.
- Make your cubicle a welcoming place: While you don’t want your cubicle to be the company social club, it will seem less institutional if people stop by to visit from time to time. Leave a candy dish in your office, for example, and when people do stop by, be courteous to them. The more interaction you have with your co-workers, the less impersonal your cubicle will seem.
- Leave your cubicle from time to time: This may seem a strange tip, but the simple act of getting up and walking around your workplace may help you deal with the impersonal aspects of your cubicle. Not only will you get some exercise, but you will likely enjoy looking at something other than your computer and the walls of your partitions.
Your cubicle is designed to help your productivity, so don’t expect it to be a second home or a place of rest and re-energizing. With that in mind, however, you can still make yourself comfortable in your cubicle and work to take away its impersonal nature.
