Letter Opening Equipment

Most offices acknowledge the need for equipment which assists in the sending of mail, however, many do not realize the need for letter opening equipment. More mail comes into the average office in a given day than goes out on a single mailing, and an automated letter opener eliminates the need for a person opening each envelope individually.

Letter opening equipment comes in two basic styles, chadders and slitters. Chadders cut a notch all across one edge of an envelope, but can run the risk of damaging the contents therein. Chadders, because of this limitation, are often lower priced than the more accurate slitters. Slitters actually slice into the envelope, avoiding the pages inside. Both types of letter opening equipment can offer a jogging function during which the envelopes are jostled so all the pages inside to fall deeper into the envelope, keeping it a safe distance from the cutting mechanism.

Like letter folding machines, letter openers also range from the slower, manually fed models to the faster, automated versions. As each envelope passes through the machine, it is slit open and stacked neatly in a tray on the other side.

One consideration is often overlooked when shopping for letter opening equipment. When mail arrives in your office, it will not all be the same size, nor will it all be held within the same type of #10 envelopes. Some will be standard sizes and thickness, but many will be the thicker Kraft envelopes and others will be the super-strong Tyvek envelopes. Make sure the machine you purchase can handle them all.
