The purpose of a fire alarm is to alert you to a fire before you see it because by the time you see the flames, it may be too late for you to exit the building safely. Consequently, fire alarm systems generally do not require a monitoring service, nor they do not include keypads with passcodes or motion sensors. The goal of a fire alarm is simply to get people out of the building. However, although business fire alarm systems are less complex than full security alarm systems, these systems are far more than a simple smoke detector.

The National Fire Protection Association holds especially strict standards for business fire alarm systems. Among other things, a business has to have regular inspections and more than a simple smoke detector. Many business fire alarm systems including sprinkler systems that have to connect with the building’s plumbing system. The costs add up quickly, and an entire fire alarm system, complete with sprinkler systems, can easily cost several thousands of dollars.

Most existing buildings are equipped with fire alarm systems. However, if you are constructing a new building or need to add a fire alarm system to your current building, talk to several companies. In addition, it is a good idea to contact the fire department and your insurance company. Ask what kind of system each recommends or requires, and move ahead on their recommendations.
