There are many numbers of concerns that business owners face on a consistent basis. From compliance with employer regulations to customer satisfaction, business owners wrestle with so many problems that workplace safety and privacy are sometimes forgotten. If you’re uncomfortable with the thought that only a traditional lock stands between the outside world and your files, or if it’s important to you to that your business possess an effective method for granting employee access, then an access control system might work for you. In its most simple expression, an access control system is a device that has power over access to a certain area. Depending upon the complexity of the access control system, it may also monitor the area under its control. In many cases a central control device contains a list of the personnel cleared for a particular area. Each time a personal identifier, such as an electronic key, is presented to the “reader” device, the central control device checks that personal identification key against the list of accepted entrants and responds accordingly.

It’s likely that you’ve personally encountered some sort of access control system in the not too distant past, especially given the heightened security in airports and public places. For example, the magnetic cards that grant airport employees access to restricted areas are a type of access control system. Highly complex access control systems are often integrated through the internet and may control numerous doors, gates and other entryways. In contrast, a simple pushbutton electronic lock is also defined as an access control system. Unsurprisingly, the wide variety of access control systems results in significant price disparities between high-end and less complex models, with prices ranging anywhere from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands.
