When purchasing a stroller, be sure to check the seatbelts. You will need seatbelts that have at least three straps – two that go over the shoulders and one that comes between the legs. The seatbelt should be easy for you to operate, but not easy enough for your child to figure out. Always buckle your precious cargo before you take off on your adventure.
Strollers also come with brakes that can lock into place and are usually located over the wheels. These brakes should be engaged every time the stroller is stopped so baby does not roll off. Check the brakes in the store to ensure the wheels lock when the brakes are activated.
Check your stroller for hidden dangers such as sharp edges that can poke baby or springs and crevices that can trap and pinch baby’s fingers. Also, make sure the leg openings are not wide enough for an infant to slip out of which can cause serious injury.
Choose a stroller that has a wide enough base so that the stroller is not easy to tip. If the stroller has a reclining seat, make sure the stroller is sturdy enough so that it does not tip over when baby is completely reclined.
As always, look for strollers with the JPMA Certification Seal to ensure that the stroller has been tested for safety purposes.
