Changing Table Safety Precautions

As with all baby gear, certain safety precautions should be taken when installing and using your changing table.

• If a changing table requires assembly, be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.

• When shopping for a changing table, be sure that you choose a sturdy model. Give the table a good shake in the store to ensure you have decided on one that has sturdy legs and does not wiggle.

• It would be best if the changing table you purchased came with guardrails that surrounded the changing area to keep baby from rolling off. The higher the guardrails are around the surface, the safer your baby will be.

• Also, choose a model that comes with safety straps that buckle to keep baby secure on the changing surface. If the table you purchased is not equipped with safety straps, you can purchase them separately and install them yourself. Make it a habit to use these safety straps each time you change your baby.

• Although many distractions can come up during the middle of a diaper change, never leave your baby – not even for a slight moment – alone on the changing table. The products that a parent uses during diaper changes should be readily available and within reach from the changing table surface.

• Many changing tables come with hardware that anchors the piece of furniture to the wall. This ensures the changing table will not topple over.
