Safety Considerations

Whether you purchase a walker or an exersaucer for baby, you should always administer the proper safety precautions.

Childproofing your home is the best way to prevent injuries from walkers. Since your child can move himself freely about the house, be sure that the outlets are plugged, cabinets and drawers are childproofed and that the stairs are blocked off by gates. Prevent poisonings by keeping household cleaners out of baby’s reach and remove or cover sharp edges on furniture that baby could bump into. Also, remove heavy and breakable objects from spaces down low that baby could reach.

If your child must have a baby walker, purchase a newer model that meets the newest safety standards. Be sure the walker is too wide to fit through any doorways or through the stairwell. Also, newer walkers have a braking mechanism that stops the walker if more than one of the wheels comes off of the ground, as if the baby were going down the stairs. Keep in mind that walkers make baby quite fast, and your supervision alone is not enough to prevent injury since you probably wouldn’t be able to get to baby quickly enough.

When purchasing your walker or exersaucer, see that there are no little parts that could break off and become a choking hazard. Also, look for one with no crevices or spaces where your baby’s toes and fingers could get pinched.

Your walker and exersaucer will come with age and weight minimums and maximums. Be sure to follow these restrictions. Do not carry your baby around in the exersaucer or walker, always use any safety harnesses provided and inspect the toy regularly for any wear and tear that may make it dangerous for baby.
