What to Consider When Purchasing

Each carrier has its own benefits, so choose a carrier that is right for your family’s budget, lifestyle and needs. Here are some things to think about while trying to make your purchase:

o Front carriers fit snuggly against your chest so baby can become very warm. Choose a carrier has breathable fabric that can be removed and washed. Also, consider your surroundings and choose the fabric accordingly. If you live in a warmer climate, don’t pick a carrier made or corduroy or a heavy-gauge nylon.
o Find a carrier with ample padding in the shoulder, waist and neck straps to protect yourself from neck and back strain. Make sure the headrest in a front carrier is also adequately padded for baby’s comfort.
o The wider the straps in a carrier or backpack, the more evenly the weight of baby will be distributed. Also, if you plan on sharing your carrier or backpack with your spouse or babysitter, be sure the straps are fully adjustable.
o Try slipping the carrier on and off by yourself to make sure it is doable even when you have baby in one hand. The same should be done before buying a backpack.
o Carriers are difficult to breastfeed in, so if this is a main concern then maybe a sling would be better.
o Slings tend to be bulky in nature, so pick one that doesn’t have excess fabric making it even more bulky.
o Choose a sling that fits you well. A sling that knocks your thighs or hangs below your belly button is probably too long. You want to just be able to fit your baby in comfortable.
o Choose a sling with comfortable, breathable fabric.
o Look for a backpack with a waist belt if you plan to carry a heavier child. This will help distribute the child’s weight and save your back and shoulders.

Most front carriers cost between $25 and $75, but some models can cost $100. Most slings have the same design and cost around $40. Backpacks carry the most weight and are the most expensive, costing between $75 and $100.
