The Svalbard Islands

The Svalbard Islands are located halfway between Norway and The North Pole and offer untouched, arctic wilderness with vast mountain areas and magnificent glaciers. These Arctic islands are under Norwegian control.

Longyearbyen is the seat of local government and Norway’s main administrative center on Svalbard. Snowmobiles and boats are the most common ways of transportation as there are no roads between the different settlements.

Even though Svalbard is so close to the North Pole, the area has a relatively mild climate compared to areas at the same latitude. The average temperature ranges from 14 degrees below zero during the winter to 6 degrees above zero during summer.

Small and large glaciers cover about 60 percent of Svalbard’s landmass. Only 6 to 7 percent of the land area is covered by vegetation.
